Specialisation in Pathology and Clinical Practice of Companion Animals

The specialist in Pathology and Clinical Practice of Companion Animals must acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of companion animal medicine. In particular, they must gain a thorough understanding of pathophysiology, functional and instrumental semiotics, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in dogs and cats.

Admission

Pending the issuance of the decree allocating the resources provided by the 2025 Budget Law for the funding of scholarships for veterinary residents, the admission call for the school is suspended.

Admission is granted through a call for applications available on the University of Pisa website.
The number of places available will be specified within the call.
The University website also provides procedures, forms, and examination papers from previous years.

Maximum number of students admitted per academic year: 12.

The operation of the school is governed by the Regulations.

ECTS Specification:
One University Credit (CFU) is equivalent to:

  • 12–25 hours for lectures or equivalent educational activities (15 hours of independent study);
  • 15–25 hours for internship activities (T -10 hours of individual work);
  • 15–25 hours for practical teaching activities (PT – 10 hours of individual work): interactive lectures, practical exercises, and 10 hours of independent study.

These activities contribute to achieving 70% of the total CFUs allocated to professional training activities.

Access requirements

The following requirements are mandatory for admission to the competitions; failure to meet them will result in exclusion:

  • A second-cycle or single-cycle Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine (class 47/S or LM-42), or a five-year “old system” degree in Veterinary Medicine; the degree must be obtained by the application deadline for online submission to the competition.
  • Authorisation to practise as a veterinary surgeon in Italy.
    If not yet obtained, this authorisation must be acquired by 15 January 2025, the date set for the start of teaching activities.

Entrance Examination

The written examination consists of a computer-based multiple-choice test. The test is designed to assess general knowledge in the area of specialisation (topics include medicine, surgery, reproduction, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, and clinical pathology). The examination will be conducted on a computer using a questionnaire of 70 single-answer questions (one correct answer and two incorrect answers).
Time allowed: 70 minutes.

Educational Objectives

  • Animal nutrition, husbandry, and hygiene, with a foundation in epidemiology and the use of information systems;
  • Organisation and management of veterinary activities in relation to facilities and the local area;
  • Internal medicine: diagnosis and treatment (including emergencies) of major diseases; prevention, health education, and health management in livestock farms;

  • Emergency and first aid: resuscitation techniques and management of urgent cases;
  • Surgery: patient assessment, principles of asepsis, surgical techniques, treatment selection, and postoperative management;

  • Theriogenology: animal reproduction, insemination techniques and diagnostics, management of delivery rooms and laboratories;

  • Transversal skills: clinical nutrition, biostatistics and epidemiology, professional communication

Career opportunities

The specialization diploma provides access to professional opportunities in the field of pet clinical medicine, with skills in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases of the various organ systems, as well as in specialized veterinary medicine, prevention, and advanced clinical care.

1) In the public sector:

  • Work in Zooprophylactic Institutes
  • Work in Local Health Authorities (ASL)

2) Leadership roles in the private sector and consultancy:

Class schedule

Teaching activities are generally concentrated in two days a week.

Curricular internship – training project

The internship at the Specialization Schools consists of the trainee participating in professionally-oriented practical activities to complete their theoretical, practical, and specialized training. A list of approved facilities for internships is available. To complete an internship at facilities not affiliated with the Department, it is necessary to follow the procedure for signing a new agreement, which can be found on the dedicated page.

The internship may be conducted without overlapping with classroom teaching. The resident who begins the internship must present himself at the facility with his Personal Training Booklet (provided by the School Director).
