AAI promote a significant relationship between humans and animals and improve human well-being while ensuring respect for the animals involved. The scientific community recognizes the beneficial effects of AAI on participants; however studies on multiparametric monitoring of animal welfare are still limited. Due to the heterogeneity of settings, it’s crucial to guarantee animal welfare and assess the suitability of AAI dogs in a standardised way. This research aims to monitor dogs in AAI projects in elderly homes, prisons, and schools using physiological and behavioural parameters and to evaluate the impact of AAI on both participants and dog’s handelrs. Additionally, a protocol for the selection process and preliminary evaluation of suitability of dog-handler dyads was created, in collaboration with the Italian “Centro di Referenza Nazionale for AAI (IZSVe)”.
