Who brought LIFE PolliNetwork to life and what do its partners do?

Find out who created LIFE PolliNetwork, a project co-financed by the LIFE Programme, MASE and the Cariplo Foundation. An initiative with a totally national vocation that intends to present itself as a pilot project for the protection of pollinators at European level.

Each partner will dedicate themselves to different areas of the project, also participating in other areas, and will be roughly divided into:

  • Research and development – the leading experts on apoidea, butterflies and hoverflies from three Italian universities and ISPRA, are responsible for scientific monitoring in the field. They measure the trend of bee, butterfly, and hoverfly populations along the ‘buzz lines’ or ecological corridors that crisscross Italy created by the project and map the stakeholders involved in pollinator protection.

UniTo, UniPi, UniBo, ISPRA

  • Technology – research needs technological supports in order to be applied homogeneously and consistently at national level. Thus the DSS digital system was born. The innovative technological tool will support pollinator monitoring and guide operators during the habitat restoration design phase.

TeamDev

  • Restoration areas – Italy’s main infrastructure, representatives of the agricultural sector and protected areas contribute by making their areas available and implementing restoration actions to create buzz lines. The pollinators will thus have habitats connected from north to south in 10 Italian regions, providing safe passages along roads, energy stations, railways, agricultural land and protected areas. The territory will be less jagged, promoting a safe environment for their transit, pollination and survival.

ANAS, TERNA, RFI, COPAGRI, WWF Italia

  • Project outreach and citizen science-all communication, dissemination, training, and citizen engagement activities-are the heart of the project. Citizens, volunteers, and schools are the amplifiers of the project’s results and best practices, which will theoretically find fertile ground for widespread knowledge of pollinator needs that impact national food security.
