Generally, it is treated through the use of uterine lavages, ecbolic and anti-inflammatory drugs, and antimicrobials, as and when needed. However, the lack of response to traditional therapy and the increasing incidence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens have led to the development of alternative therapies for the treatment of mares with chronic endometritis, including platelet-rich plasma and ozone therapy (O3). Intrauterine treatment with O3 has been shown to be effective in reducing uterine inflammation in cows and in promoting local endometrial angiogenesis in mares. Furthermore, O3 therapy exhibits an antimicrobial effect, demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, since no studies are yet available that indicate a standardized protocol to be followed for the ozone treatment of endometritis in mares, our study will aim to evaluate the efficacy of intrauterine treatment based on a mixture of O2-O3 gas to treat this pathology.
