Compulsory courses and activities For the completion of the degree, the completion of mandatory training activities is required, aimed at acquiring transversal skills useful for both the academic and professional path. IT skills The curriculum of all Degree Programs in the Department of Veterinary Sciences, as in many other University degree programs, requires students to acquire basic IT skills through self-learning activities. SAI@UNIPI – teaching modules The University of Pisa has developed the SAI@UNIPI project, an e-learning platform designed to support students both in distance learning and in completing certification activities. The program is structured into multiple training modules (worth 2 or 3 ECTS), and according to the requirements of their degree program, students acquire the necessary skills by completing one or more modules. ECDL FULL As an alternative to the SAI@UNIPI project, the ECDL Full certification is also recognised. Test Centre DSV For several years, the Department of Veterinary Sciences (DSV) has operated its own Test Center, affiliated with the University and accredited by AICA, to provide certification services. Already qualified to issue ECDL certifications, the Test Center continues to support students through the SAI Project. More information on how to acquire IT skills is available on the dedicated page: Test Center, SAI, ECDL. Language skills A total of 3 ECTS credits are assigned for knowledge of a foreign language (English or an official language of the European Union), with level B1 required up to the 2022-23 cohort and level B2 required starting from the 2023-24 cohort. Language skills can be acquired at the Interdepartmental Language Center (CLI). Language eligibility To obtain the language qualification, it is necessary to access the CLI portal, in the University Qualification section, and then follow the provided instructions. For enrollment, authentication on the CLI e-learning platform must be carried out using your University credentials. The recording of ECTS credits is carried out directly by the Student Offices, following an email notification to Ms. Patrizia Lenzi (tel. 050 2213432), providing your surname, first name, student ID number, and the date of the exam. Recognition of foreign language qualification Students who already hold a language certification must contact Prof. Elisabetta Giannessi, Anatomy lecturer and first-year tutor, for the recording of credits. Students who hold a certificate proving knowledge of a foreign language at least at level B1 (up to the 2022-23 cohort) or B2 (from the 2023-24 cohort), issued by recognised certification bodies, must contact Prof. Elisabetta Giannessi, who will record the 3 ECTS credits. Workplace safety courses The workplace safety course is mandatory for all students. The start of the training, scheduled at the beginning of the second year, will be announced by the Head of the Degree Program. The training program is divided into two phases. Students enrolled in the second year and beyond are eligible to participate. General Part (University)To access the general part, it is required to complete the personal data form and sign the privacy notice by the end of September. The form, with the declaration of having read the privacy notice duly completed, must be submitted to the Academic Unit via Microsoft Forms.Once the documentation is received, the University Safety and Environment Office sends an email to each student with the website to access the course and complete the related assessments.Upon passing the assessments, the Safety and Environment Office issues the certificate of qualification. Specific Part (DSV)After obtaining the qualification for the general part, it is possible to access the specific part, provided by the Department. This training, to be completed on the Testvet website, consists of 5 modules, each accompanied by an assessment test, which is held approximately once a month in the Computer Lab.Registration must be done directly on the Testvet website under “Registration for the Safety Test” (authentication must be completed by clicking the Shibboleth Login button). The system automatically closes registrations the day before the test date, which is also the deadline for canceling your registration. Please note: at the end of each session, the system automatically displays the test results. If the student does not pass, it is possible to retake the test on the topic that was not passed in a subsequent session. For further information, you can contact Dr. Maria Novella Benvenuti. Log book The LogBook is a student’s personal training record, in which all practical activities carried out during the educational program must be recorded, in order to verify the achievement of learning objectives. Specifically, it serves as a tool to check and certify the skills acquired by the student during practical teaching associated with individual course modules and during internship activities. The LogBook is issued at the beginning of the second year and must be completed in all its sections, obtaining the instructor’s signature for activities carried out within the course or internship at the Department, or the Internship Sector Coordinator’s signature for activities conducted at external facilities. LogBook The LogBook is a personal training record in which the student records all practical activities and procedures carried out during the educational program, in order to verify the achievement of learning objectives. The activities included in the LogBook are part of the “Day-One Competencies” that a newly graduated veterinarian must have acquired, as defined by the EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education), a European organization that evaluates and promotes quality standards in veterinary education. The Department of Veterinary Sciences in Pisa, through the Master’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine, is currently accredited by EAEVE. It is divided into three sections: the first covers the acquisition of safety instructions, the second covers transversal skills, and the third covers professional skills related to the different scientific-disciplinary sectors (SSD). The complete LogBook must be submitted to the Head of the Degree Program before graduation. LogBook Template Attached LogBook Template Guidelines LogBook The management of the LogBook is governed by a specific procedure established by the Course. Elective ECTS credits To obtain the academic degree, it is necessary to earn 300 university credits (CFU), of which 9 CFU, referred to as ‘elective CFU,’ can be obtained through optional courses offered by the Degree Program in the 2nd semester of the 5th year and included in the study plan. Enrollment in optional courses is governed by a specific procedure and must be completed by filling out the dedicated form between November 15 and December 15 each year. Elective CFU can also be earned by taking exams in other Degree Programs at the University, subject to authorization from the Presidency of the Veterinary Medicine Degree Program, using the specific MV form – ‘Request to take exams from another Degree Program. It is also possible to earn elective CFU through other activities, which are always subject to final evaluation: Achievement of a foreign language level higher than B1 (up to the 2022-23 cohort, 3 CFU); Achievement of a foreign language level higher than B2 (from the 2023-24 cohort, 3 CFU); Participation in the series of interactive laboratories aimed at developing initiative and enhancing employability, offered by the Career Labs of the University of Pisa; Internship activity, according to the procedures established for curricular internships. Academic tutoring Tutoring activities are designed to guide and support students, encourage their active participation in the study program, and, as far as possible, remove any difficulties they may encounter during their academic journey. The Department of Veterinary Sciences offers various types of tutoring activities, which can be carried out by both faculty members and students. Teacher Tutor Until the 2019/2020 academic year, the University’s Tutoring Regulations provided for the assignment of an individual Faculty Tutor to each first-year student, to be maintained throughout their entire academic career. Since 2020, by resolution of the Academic Senate, Departments have been authorized to experiment with new organizational approaches to faculty tutoring. From the 2020/2021 academic year, the Degree Program in Veterinary Medicine has assigned a limited number of faculty members to all students of a given year (a “year group of faculty tutors”). In this way, students change Faculty Tutors as they progress from one year to the next, while still having access to tutoring activities aimed at addressing the issues they may encounter in that specific year. In the process of being nominated Student Tutor A student tutor is a student who provides support and guidance to first-year students in the Veterinary Medicine Degree Program. This is a person who is currently following the study program and has likely already experienced the challenges of academic life. Welcome Tutoring The welcome tutoring program was designed to help first-year students in the 2020/21 academic year integrate during the first semester, both in terms of study organization and social life, since the courses were held online. This program involved two senior students, the first-year faculty members, and the members of the Department’s Tutoring Committee. Peer Tutoring The Peer Tutoring Service, aimed at students from all Degree Programs of the Department of Veterinary Sciences, is designed to provide guidance and support throughout their academic journey. Tutoring within the Orientation and Tutoring Project (POT) The POT project specific to the Veterinary Medicine Degree Program offers tutoring activities to both first-year students and those who are repeating courses. By contacting the tutors, it is possible to arrange remote meetings via the Microsoft Teams platform, and if necessary, students can also interact with the President of the Degree Program and/or with the faculty members who are part of the various bodies of the program. For first-year Veterinary Medicine students The POT-SSVET project is aimed at first-year Veterinary Medicine students who have identified entry-level deficiencies (OFA) or who started first-year activities late due to adjustments in the national ranking. First-year students can contact senior students via the following email address: potmv.tutoratoimmatricolati@vet.unipi.it. For Veterinary Medicine students who are repeating courses The project aims to support students who are repeating courses by helping them identify the reasons for delays in their studies and overcome difficulties to complete their academic program.Tutoring is also available for students who have resumed their studies after a long interruption and for those who, having requested the recognition of a foreign degree, need to complete only certain exams, the internship, and the thesis. Interested students can contact the tutors via the following email address: potmv.tutoratofuoricorso@vet.unipi.it. Useful Information and FAQ Ocupational Health Surveillance Students are subject to occupational health surveillance and are regulated by a specific procedure. Fourth-year barrier exam In order to attend fourth-year courses (and those of subsequent years) and take the related exams, students must have passed all exams from the first two years and at least one exam from the third year by September 30 (or, in any case, by the end of the September exam session). If these requirements are not met, the student will be subject to a progression barrier and will not be allowed to attend fourth-year courses or take the related exams. Course transfer and credit recognition If the student has already been admitted through the entrance exam and is already enrolled at the University of Pisa, they can access the GEPACO portal using the same credentials as the ALICE portal. The student must follow the instructions to select their Degree Program, remembering to upload, when requested, the receipt of the DSU benefits application or the receipt of the tuition payment. Once the procedure is correctly completed within the deadline, the Degree Program will review the student’s previous academic record, and the student will receive an email from the Student Office inviting them to log back into the GEPACO portal to view the recognized exams and formally accept the decision. Further details are available on the University’s website. If a student comes from a Degree Program not belonging to the University of Pisa, they must first pay the comprehensive tuition fee and the regional fee, even if these have already been paid for the same academic year at their previous university; the regional fee is due only if it has not already been paid for enrollment at another Tuscan university. After obtaining the clearance, the previous university will send all documentation related to the student’s academic record (the so-called “transfer certificate”) to the University of Pisa. After enrolling at the University of Pisa, the student must self-certify the exams completed at the previous university; the Degree Program will prepare a summary of the courses that can be recognized, which the student must review and, if appropriate, formally accept. More information is available on the University’s website. The contact person for the University Student Offices is Ms. Patrizia Lenzi. Electronic student record consultation (exams, fees, etc.) To access the electronic student record, students can log in to the ALICE portal using their credentials. The portal allows them to view completed exams and the status of tuition fee payments. If a completed exam is not recorded, it is possible to contact Ms. Patrizia Lenzi. Contact with Faculty Members For communications regarding your academic career or to request information, please consult the faculty member’s personal profile. Please note: it is strictly necessary to use the institutional email address (nomeutente@studenti.unipi.it). Messages sent from private email addresses may not receive a response.
